How This Test Works

  1. The Multi-Touch box listens for every finger touching the screen at once, drawing a numbered, colored dot for each one so you can see if any go missing.
  2. The Tap Accuracy grid marks each cell green the moment it registers a tap, which makes it easy to spot dead zones — especially near screen edges and corners.
  3. The Swipe box measures the straight-line distance and time between where a touch starts and where it ends, then reports the direction (up, down, left or right) and speed.
  4. Nothing here works with a mouse — these tests rely on real touch events, so a touchscreen, tablet, or touch-enabled laptop is required.
Why this matters: A touchscreen with a failing digitizer often shows up as one finger not registering while others do, taps near the bezel not being detected, or swipes being read as the wrong direction. About the Touch Screen Test & Its Purpose

The Touch Screen Test is a free, browser-based diagnostic. It checks whether your touchscreen is registering input the way it should. Your touchscreen might have problems. The test finds them.

The test runs three checks together. It checks how many fingers it can track at once. Multi-touch is important. Some screens track one finger. Some track two. Some track ten fingers at the same time. The test measures this. It checks whether every part of the surface responds to a tap. Not every area might work the same. The edges might be different from the center. The test touches everywhere and records what happens. It checks whether swipe gestures are read with the correct direction and distance. A swipe should move left. It should move right. It should move up. It should move down. The direction matters. The distance matters too. The test captures all of this.

Its purpose is to separate a hardware problem from a software one. Phones, tablets, touch-enabled laptops, and kiosk displays all rely on a digitizer layer under the glass to sense touch — and that layer can develop dead zones, drop fingers during multi-touch gestures, or misread swipes as it wears or gets damaged. An app behaving oddly could be a bug in that app, or it could be your screen itself. This test isolates the screen from any single app so you know which one you're actually dealing with.

How to Fix if my Touch Screen not pass the test?

Work through these in order — most touch issues turn out to be software, dirt, or a case/film problem rather than the digitizer itself.

  1. Clean the screen and your fingersGrease, moisture, and dust are the single most common cause of missed or inconsistent taps. Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth and make sure your fingers are clean and dry, then retest.
  2. Remove any screen protector or case edgeThick or bubbled screen protectors, and cases that overlap the glass edges, can block touch near the bezel — exactly where the Tap Accuracy grid often shows dead cells.
  3. Restart the deviceA frozen or misbehaving touch driver is often cleared by a simple restart, especially if the problem appeared suddenly after an update or a specific app.
  4. Update your OS and graphics/touch driversOn touch-enabled laptops, an outdated digitizer or graphics driver can cause missed touches or phantom input. Check for pending system updates before assuming it's hardware.
  5. Test with a different case, cable, or charger unpluggedSome chargers and cables introduce electrical noise that interferes with capacitive touch sensing. Unplug from power and retest, and try the device without its case.

Why does part of my screen not respond to touch?
This is usually a dead zone — a section of the digitizer that no longer senses touch. It can be caused by physical damage (a crack or impact), moisture under the glass, a loose display connector, or a thick screen protector blocking contact near the edges. Run the Tap Accuracy grid a few times to confirm the same cells fail consistently before assuming it's hardware.
Why does my screen only register one finger instead of multiple?
Most modern touchscreens support 5 or more simultaneous touch points, but a failing digitizer, a cheap screen protector, or moisture on the glass can cause it to drop additional fingers. If the Multi-Touch test consistently shows fewer touches than your device is rated for, try cleaning the screen first, then testing without a case or protector.
Can a screen protector actually cause test failures?
Yes. Thick tempered-glass protectors, bubbled or peeling film, and protectors that don't sit flush near the edges are a very common cause of missed taps and reduced multi-touch accuracy — especially in the Tap Accuracy grid's corner and edge cells. Removing it temporarily is a quick way to rule this out.
My swipes are being detected in the wrong direction — what causes that?
This usually isn't a hardware fault. It typically happens when a swipe starts or ends near a dead zone, when your finger lifts at an angle rather than a straight line, or when the gesture is too short for the test to read direction reliably. Try slower, longer, and more deliberate swipes across the middle of the box before suspecting the digitizer itself.
Does this test work on a laptop that isn't touch-enabled?
No — the Multi-Touch and Swipe tests rely on real touch events, which only fire on devices with an actual touchscreen. On a non-touch device you can still click through with a mouse to see how the tests behave, but the results won't reflect real touch hardware.
